Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen's 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' on Nov 16. The Deluxe Package comprises over six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. The media contents are packaged within an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen and never-before-seen photographs. Containing a wealth of previously unreleased material, 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' offers an unprecedented look into Springsteen's creative process during a defining moment in his career. 'The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story' will additionally be released as a 3CD/3 Blu Ray disc set.

The set will be available as 'The Promise,' an edition which consists of only the unheard complete songs on two CDs or four LPs, along with lyrics and the new essay by Springsteen.

The previously unheard song "Save My Love" and an excerpt from the documentary is streaming below.

The Deluxe Package includes 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' digitally remastered for the first time.

"'Darkness' was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble...But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after 'Born To Run' and before the collection of songs that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' became."

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Brokenhearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. 'The Promise' is simply a great listening experience."

The Deluxe Package also features "The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,'" a documentary directed by Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978--including home rehearsals and studio sessions--with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record. Advanced word on the documentary is so strong that it was invited to debut at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and will make its television debut on HBO on October 7.

DVD 1: "THE PROMISE: THE MAKING OF 'DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN'"

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' in its entirety from Asbury Park. The special performance in Asbury Park was shot in HD without an audience and successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original album.

Si le boss se met à nous faire le coup des rééditions façon bootlegs, on n'a pas fini de cramer notre larfeuilles... Ce disque est parmis les meilleurs de Springsteen. A part le live de 2009, le reste me semble fort intéressant...

j'ajoute que la réédition de Born To run ne comportait qu'un Live qui a finalement été édité en CD et que je recommande très, mais alors, très chaudement.

Moi, c'est Shuffle qui me plairait. L'album que je préfère.

Et au fait t'as pu mettre la main sur les 4 CD de Tracks?

Un article assez complet sur The Promise: Darkness On The Edge Of Town du boss dans Le Monde
Cet album a apparemment donné lieu a une importante documentation officieuse chez les fans et une 40aine de chansons de cette période figurent dans divers boots, voire coffret, qui au dire du boss lui-même, sont de très bonne qualité.

N'empêche, je crois que je vais craquer. Cet album avec Born To Run, The River et Nebraska constitue pour moi la moëlle épinière de l'oeuvre de Springsteen

très déçu par The Promise ce coffret. je n'ai pas vu les DVD, juste des extraits et ça ne me branche pas des masses... Pourtant très fan de Darkness!

Les extraits sont un peu chiants en effet, même au dire de Springsteen... Un certain Barry Rebo a filmé les séances d'enregistrement en noir et blanc et, un peu comme Godard avec son One + One des Stones, on ressent le laborieux et long travail d'accouchement d'un disque... Par contre, les extraits de concert doivent être chouette! Toujours pareil avec ces rockstars qui sortent leurs archives, les fans connaisseurs les connaissent déjà, donc pas de surprise si ce n'est la mauvaise surprise du prix du coffret... Quoique que je trouve qu'il est raisonnable sur l'édition vinyle (une trentaine d'euros, les 3 vinyles sur amazon... cheap, non?)

Le nouvel album de Bruce Springsteen sort début mars et s'appelle Wrecking Ball.. Tiens ça me dit quelque chose Mais apparemment, au lieu de la douceur romantique du titre de notre cher loner, cet opus s'annonce très rock et punchy! Le E-street band est agrémenté sur certains morceaux de Matt Chamberlain (batteur du groupe Pearl Jam) et Tom Morello (gratteux de Rage Against The Machine), le tout produit par Ron Aniello (producteur de Patti Scialfa avec qui Springsteen s'était encoquiné et partageait le chant lead sur l'affreuse trilogie Tunnel Of Love/ Human Touch/ Lucky Town...)

un son étonnant avec des textures inattendues, des boucles musicales et des percussions électroniques, des rythmiques influencées par le hip-hop et la musique irlandaise. d'après la presse californienne... Mouais... Si tout est dans la même veine que le titre single Take Care Of Our Own, ben ça me semble du bon Springsteen pur jus, sans surprise ni fioriture et c'est comme ça qu'on l'aime.
